How to Make Decisions by Doing Nothing- 3 Easy Steps

How to Make Decisions by Doing Nothing- 3 Easy Steps

Have you ever solved a problem whilst cleaning the inside of your shed? Or had a ‘eureka’ moment when doing absolutely nothing?

Your brain at the time of doing nothing very much, has been activating various parts responsible for memory, integration and reflection. Parts of the brain that tend to go into the background when we are consciously thinking about an issue.

But, and this is an important ‘but’, to have solved the problem or had an insight you have undoubtedly put some hours already into this?

This is important to resolving our frustration with a situation. The following is the process to follow to help generate new thinking and make better decisions.

1st Step – Gather information. Pull together all the relevant data but don’t go overboard and make yourself ill. Being severely stressed will help no-one.

2nd Step – Then STEP AWAY and DO nothing. That is easier said then done with our mind endlessly chattering but there is a good reason for the old saying “sleep on it”. Our unconscious mind goes to work in a different way when we are asleep or practicing mindfulness or self-hypnosis. But what if you have not time for all that malarky! Do something mindless-such as taking a walk with no headphones or phone (argggh- I can’t do that I hear you say. Yes you really can!) Or take a bath, or clean out the shed, repot some plants, wash the floor or car. Some clients tell me running helps, I find a swim very hypnotic and solve many problems with my head in the water.

3rd Step- Once the lightbulb has gone on take action immediately. Even if all you do is write it down. Because as soon as you start to take action the ideas will keep flowing.

How do I know this works? Because it’s the basis for a successful coaching session. Clients come with a problem or issue. We spend a few minutes in a calm state clearing away the clutter of the day so enabling them to think through the siltation with no distractions. Actions are then committed to paper to take away.

Allowing yourself time to block out the constant chatter and distractions will be the challenge. But if you do I guarantee you will be rewarded.

Remember-We don’t always have to be busy to be the best we can be
