10 Dec Piriformis- A pain in the Butt!
Piriformis is a muscle that is found in the buttock and plays an important role in hip movement and stability. It is also a very important area as the sciatic nerve sits very close by and can be irritated by a tight piriformis.
Physiotherapists commonly see issues with piriformis arising from an imbalance of the muscles around the hip. It can also be caused by something as simple as sitting with your wallet in your back pocket! This can cause pain in the hip, lower back and even down the leg.
Piriformis issues can usually be resolved by seeing a physiotherapist to work on any muscle imbalance and provide a strengthening and stability programme to reduce the risk of any further issues.
