Preventing Injury When Gardening

Preventing Injury When Gardening

We are seeing an increase in injuries relating to gardening, mostly backs, necks and shoulders.

These injuries are normally caused by unfamiliar and repetitive movements or awkward lifting and handling.

There are several things you can do to help reduce the risk of injury while gardening:

  • Take regular breaks.  Doing an activity you are not used to doing or heavier tasks than usual for a prolonged period of time can cause issues.  Make sure you take a break or do a different task to avoid lots of repetitive movements.
  • Know your limits. Attempting to lift and move awkward and bulky items in the garden (paving slabs, tree stumps etc) can result in injury.  This is not necessarily down to a lack of strength, but the awkward and uncomfortable position you may have to get into in order to move the item.  Where possible, ask for help from someone so you can move well and safely.
  • Don’t bite off more than you can chew.  Rome wasn’t built in a day so avoid trying to get everything done in a short period of time, your body will thank you!
  • Watch how you move.  Long periods of time bent down or kneeling to do weeding and planting can result in issues.  Try and change positions regularly or use a small stool to perch on if you find this easier.
